Honoring the 100th year aniversary of the olympic games in Antwerp —

Scope

About one hundred years ago, the olympic games came to Antwerp, and where held in the Kiel park. Now, the city of Antwerp wanted to commemorate that with some art installations. I was contacted and contracted by one of the selected artists (Matthijs De Block) to take on this challenge. Through some iterations, we landed on the idea of selecting extraordinary achievements in everyday life. We would track the pedestrians walking in front of the camera, and look for a few extraordinary factors. The weirdest one won. This may be the fastest walking one, or someone that stood still for an extensive amount of time etc.

We had a smart AI enabled camera (that we constructed out of a Jetson nano) track pedestrians, and sending the ID and location to a server online. We specifically chose not to send video over the internet to guarantee privacy. The results of the tracking and the calculations done on the server regarding speed, standing still etc where then sent to a display on location to show the top track of the day. On the day of the tours, it managed to even track the visitors and marked it as a special track.

For more information, I've created a Medium article that goes more in depth regarding technical challenges.
